Indoor Activities on Auckland’s North Shore: A Family Guide

Rain outside? The adventure is still on.

Rain on the windows, restless kids and another morning spent asking what to do? We know the feeling. An indoor outing can give everyone a change of scene without needing a perfect forecast.

For indoor activities on Auckland’s North Shore, think about the kind of day your children need: active playground time, a quiet library visit, a swim, a film or something creative. Adventure Alley is a family-owned indoor playground at 17 Ride Way, Rosedale, near Albany, with play areas for younger children, climbing and bouncing for bigger kids, and a café for a food-and-coffee break.

What indoor activities work well for North Shore families?

There isn’t one activity that suits every child. Start with their ages, energy levels and how much time you have.

  • Indoor playgrounds: a useful choice when children want to climb, slide, bounce and play together.
  • Libraries: a quieter outing for browsing books and reading together. Check your local library’s current programme before planning around a storytime or workshop.
  • Indoor swimming: an option for water-loving families. Check public swim hours, age rules and adult supervision requirements with the pool.
  • A family film: works well for children who are comfortable sitting through a screening. Check the film’s rating and running time first.
  • Creative activities: look for age-appropriate art, craft or messy play sessions, or keep it simple with a drawing-and-building afternoon at home.

For toddlers, a short outing between meals and naps may be plenty. For primary-aged children, time to move or make something can be a welcome break from screens. If siblings have different interests, choose one main activity and leave room for a snack stop.

Why visit Adventure Alley for indoor play?

We’re Amy and Ryan, the parents behind Adventure Alley. We want a visit to feel easy for families: somewhere the kids are happy to play, with a friendly welcome and a decent coffee for their grown-ups.

The playground has a huge ball pit, slides, climbing areas, trampolines, hoops and a 20-metre inflatable. Younger adventurers have their own play spaces to explore with a grown-up close by. You can follow your child’s pace rather than trying to fit the whole playground into one busy hour.

A café break for the whole family

Play can be hungry work. Our onsite café has coffee, food and refreshments, with seating beside the playground. Take a break together and keep supervising your children while they play.

Indoor activities for toddlers near Albany

For little ones, the outing doesn’t need to be complicated. A chance to crawl, climb, explore and repeat their favourite activity can be enough. Stay nearby, let them settle in and take breaks when they need them.

Adventure Alley has areas and equipment for younger children as well as play for bigger kids. Our guide to toddler activities on the North Shore has more ideas for visiting with a little explorer.

Visiting With a Toddler?

Little adventurers are welcome too.

We have play areas suitable for younger children, giving toddlers somewhere to move, climb and explore with their grown-up nearby.

Rainy weekends and school holiday visits

An indoor playground is a practical wet-weather option because the play doesn’t depend on the rain clearing. Adventure Alley is open seven days, 8:30am–5pm, and playground entry covers the day. If you want to leave and return, speak to our team before heading out so we can arrange a wristband.

For family visits, a parent or caregiver stays to supervise. If you need holiday care rather than a family outing, our separately booked School Holiday Programme for ages 5–10 offers supervised days. Check the programme page for current dates, hours and booking details.

Special visits and creative sessions vary throughout the year. Take a look at what’s on at Adventure Alley before choosing your day.
